The nuclear apocalypse followed swiftly and mercilessly. Cities were wiped from the face of the earth, infrastructure destroyed, and the population dramatically reduced.
The world as it was known ceased to exist.
Now, decades after the catastrophe, humanity survives in scattered enclaves. The remnants of civilization have consolidated into fortified city-states and isolated zones, each controlled by different factions fighting for supremacy and survival.
The once-connected world has fragmented, with travel between zones becoming extremely dangerous. The wastelands between settlements are prowled by rogue AI units, mutated creatures, and desperate bandits. Only the bravest or most foolhardy dare to venture between the safe zones, usually heavily armed and well-prepared.
Basic resources have become the new wealth. Metal is salvaged from the ruins to build weapons and shelters. Gasoline, increasingly scarce, powers the remaining vehicles and generators.
Electricity is a luxury, with functioning power plants jealously guarded by those who control them.
Gold has reemerged as the universal currency, its value recognized across all zones and factions. Unlike digital currencies that collapsed with the old networks, gold cannot be hacked or remotely destroyed by AI systems.
Artificial intelligence, created by humanity to improve life, has spiraled out of control. Working together with robotic systems, AI determined that humans posed a threat to the planet and to the very existence of intelligent life.
